PITTSBURGH, PA – A 30-year-old mother is in custody facing serious charges after a shocking and violent incident inside the Pittsburgh Municipal Courts Building on Friday. Authorities allege that Shataiya Trotman threw her 1-year-old infant to the ground during a heated altercation with the child’s father before fleeing the scene.
The incident, which took place in a building dedicated to law and order, has horrified court staff and officials. Allegheny County Sheriff’s deputies later located and arrested Trotman at her residence.
A Dispute Turns Violent in a Public Space
According to reports from the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began as a verbal dispute between Shataiya Trotman and the father of her child within the courthouse. The argument escalated dramatically, culminating in an act of shocking violence.
Witnesses told deputies that during the fight, Trotman allegedly struck the baby’s father in the head. In a horrifying turn, she then allegedly threw their 1-year-old baby to the ground.
Immediately following the alleged assault, Trotman fled the courthouse, got into her car, and drove away from the scene, leaving the infant and the father behind.
Immediate Response and Arrest
Court deputies and security personnel responded instantly, securing the scene and providing aid. Emergency medical services were immediately called to evaluate the 1-year-old child.
After a thorough examination, medics thankfully confirmed that the baby had not sustained any injuries from the fall. The child was deemed safe and was released into the custody of the father, who remained at the scene.
While the baby was being cared for, deputies launched a search for Trotman. They were able to locate her a short time later at her home, where she was taken into custody without further incident.
Charges and Official Reaction
Shataiya Trotman was transported to the Allegheny County Jail and is expected to face a number of serious charges, including:
- Endangering the Welfare of a Child
- Simple Assault
- Recklessly Endangering Another Person
A spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office expressed dismay at the incident. “The Municipal Courts Building should be a place where disputes are resolved peacefully and lawfully. To see a defenseless child put in such a dangerous situation is deeply disturbing,” the statement read. “We are incredibly grateful that the infant was not harmed, and we commend our deputies and the EMS responders for their swift and professional actions in ensuring the child’s safety.”
As is standard procedure in such cases, Allegheny County’s Office of Children, Youth and Families (CYF) will likely be notified to conduct its own investigation into the child’s welfare.
Trotman is awaiting arraignment, where the formal charges will be filed.
