Brandi Lowery Obituary, Death – Authorities in New Haven have released the names of the two people who were killed in a devastating head-on collision last weekend. The victims have been identified as 40-year-old Brandi Lowery, a resident of New Haven, and her seven-year-old son, Jacob Vega.
The crash occurred late Saturday night, around 10:30 p.m., on Davis Street near Roger’s Road, according to local police. Both Lowery and Jacob were transported to a nearby hospital immediately following the accident but tragically succumbed to their injuries shortly after arrival.
Initially, police did not confirm whether the woman and child were related, nor did they release the child’s identity. However, by Thursday, confirmation came through from New Haven Public Schools officials, who identified Jacob as a second-grade student at Hill Central Music Academy and confirmed that Lowery was his mother.
The heartbreaking news has left the school community in mourning. Principal Kimberly Daniley of Hill Central described Jacob as an exceptionally bright and loving child who made a lasting impression on everyone around him.
“Jacob was a ray of sunshine within the Hill Central School community,” Daniley said in a statement. “He was extremely sweet, kind, and friendly — always engaging with everyone he met. Many of his classmates even considered him their best friend. Jacob was adored by his teachers, the support staff, and everyone fortunate enough to know him. He and his mother were very close, and their love for one another was evident to everyone who saw them together. This loss is profound, and our deepest condolences go out to his family and all who knew Jacob and his mom.”
To support grieving students and staff, the New Haven school district has arranged for counseling services. Justin Harmon, a spokesperson for New Haven Public Schools, emphasized the importance of offering emotional support at such a difficult time, especially for Jacob’s classmates and teachers who are grappling with the sudden loss.
The fatal crash also left three additional people injured. Emergency crews reported that they were taken to the hospital with serious injuries, though officials stressed that their conditions were not life-threatening. The victims remain under medical care as they recover.
The Hamden Accident Reconstruction Team has taken over the investigation to determine the precise circumstances that caused the collision. Detectives are analyzing crash scene evidence and reviewing potential contributing factors, including speed, driver behavior, and road conditions at the time of the accident. Authorities have urged anyone with knowledge of the crash to come forward and assist with the investigation by calling 203-230-4000.
For the Hill Central school community, the loss of Jacob and his mother has been deeply painful. Parents, students, and staff have described them as inseparable, with a visible bond that inspired affection and respect from others. Jacob’s classmates, in particular, have struggled to process his absence, as he was widely regarded as one of the most outgoing and kind-hearted children in the school.
The tragedy also serves as a painful reminder of the dangers on local roads and the devastating impact accidents can have on families and communities. While investigators continue to work on reconstructing the events leading to the crash, friends and loved ones of the victims are left to honor the memory of a mother and child whose lives ended far too soon.
As vigils and small memorials are organized in their honor, Jacob and Brandi are being remembered not only as victims of a heartbreaking accident but also as beloved members of their school and neighborhood. Their sudden passing has left a void that will not easily be filled, but the legacy of kindness, love, and community they embodied continues to resonate with those they touched.
