The Groton community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Chad Fleming, a devoted teacher, beloved basketball coach, and respected mentor, who passed away unexpectedly.
Chad’s passing has left a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, students, colleagues, and the countless young lives he inspired both inside and outside the classroom.
Chad dedicated his life to education and youth development, serving as a teacher at Groton Middle School where he was known not only for his knowledge and skill as an educator but also for his compassion, humor, and unwavering support for his students.
He had a unique gift for connecting with young people — seeing their potential even before they could see it themselves — and was deeply committed to helping them grow, learn, and achieve their best.
Students remember him as a teacher who always listened, always encouraged, and always believed in them, no matter the challenges they faced. But Chad’s influence reached far beyond the classroom.
He was also a passionate basketball coach who dedicated countless hours to building a strong, positive, and inclusive sports community in Groton. He was instrumental in the formation of the Groton/Mystic Basketball Club (GMB), being part of the original group of parents who helped establish its foundation.
Through his leadership, vision, and tireless volunteerism, Chad created opportunities for young athletes to learn the fundamentals of the game, develop teamwork and discipline, and grow in confidence — lessons that extended far beyond the court.
“Chad was part of the initial group of parents that helped create the framework for what the Groton/Mystic Basketball Club is today,” GMB said in a heartfelt tribute. “He was a committed supporter of the development of youth basketball in Groton.
He consistently volunteered his own time to provide Groton youth with the opportunities to learn, develop, and compete on the basketball court. His dedication to Groton basketball was unparalleled and what GMB strives to replicate to this day.”
Chad’s approach to coaching reflected his broader philosophy on life: that success isn’t just about wins and losses, but about character, perseverance, teamwork, and love for the game. Mealtrain
